Reception: Photographs that document festivities from the cocktail hour through the last dance and departure.
Judges Comment: We love this rockstar image! There is so much going on: foreground, mid, background and the blast of light brings it all together. Great job by the photographer for getting in the middle of the party and making the viewer feel like they are on the dance floor.
Judges Comment: This image was a close second because of the intimacy among the chaos and the vision to take the image to another level through post-processing and border treatment.
Judges Comment: What an odd contrast of subjects in this image. The supple tones and unique subjects make you linger and gives the image a movie still feel.
Judges Comment: Fog usually stinks for making great images but fortunately this time it worked in the photographer's favor. The couple is captured in a good moment as the stage lighting outlines them. The color palette paired with the rolling fog make an otherwise typical dance shot an interesting and unique image.
Judges Comment: The steel blue and ghosty feel draws your eye throughout this image. We like the isolation of the couple and the toning makes them look like they're in a world of their own.
Judges Comment: An emotional image with lovely toning. Good angle and lens selection by the photographer. You let the family experience the moment and didn't put yourself into it.
Judges Comment: The image feels like a slick liquor ad. The cross-processing, low angle and light flare give this image flavor!
Judges Comment: A sparkler exit, how original :) The photographer took a chance and slowed down the shutter. The risk vs. the reward paid off. A nice moment capped off with some simple warm toning.
Judges Comment: A calculated capture (and a good one) uses the rim light but exposes just enough of the father's face to record his smile. The accent of the singer in the background provides an additional layer to the story.
Judges Comment: The bride looks like she is flying across the dance floor and her obvious joy can't be missed. By converting the image to b&w, the dance floor now works in your favor.
Judges Comment: The selective burning and overall "dark" feel of this image brings your eye instantly to the moment. Suggested improvements (minor) would include some additional highlight burns in the background and to the hot area on the right side of the frame.
Judges Comment: Another multi-layered image but this one has a somewhat different feeling due to the slight motion blur. The bride's happiness is unmistakable and we like how the construction of the image is layered in the shape of a V down the center of the frame.
Judges Comment: The hard circular light (q-flash?) creates a natural vignette which quickly draws your attention to the couple. The black point feels a bit heavy (clipped) and we'd like to see a bit more detail overall.
Judges Comment: We love this funny cake cutting image. So often the bride and groom face away from the crowd to cut the cake. Good thinking by the photographer to hop outside and capture the fun as it unfolded. Burn down the top left hand corner and you're set!
Judges Comment: The diffused toning combined with their laughter makes this image feel timeless. We're not sure what the dark area above his left hand is (perhaps her hand is resting on his right forearm), but it does draw attention to itself.
Judges Comment: Another good cake cutting image as the photographer takes a risk by heading outside for the event. While we do like the framing, we think it could benefit from a bit of cropping. Try losing the light on the left. It distracts and draws your eye from the main event within the image. We'd also suggest cropping to the top of the sconce and the bottom of the center plant. All of these elements currently pull your eye away from the bride and groom. Take them away and your eye is focused back on the moment.
Judges Comment: This quirky image has a lot going on and each time we look at it, we gather a little more information. The in-camera zoom or multiple exposure needs a tad more density to reach it's full potential. Good thinking!
Judges Comment: Scenic and picturesque, this b&w image (beautifully toned) is a great addition to the photographer's portfolio and shows his / her ability to stop and take it all in.
Judges Comment: Sometimes a little oddity is a good thing. A highlight burn (minor, 5%) on the top of the frame would quickly put the focus on the subject, not the sky.
Judges Comment: We're usually not fans of ultra-wides but this time it worked in the photographer's favor. The image could benefit from toning down the dance floor, adding a vignette and cropping from the bottom and right hand side. I bet Gary Fong would love this image as the second shooter on the right is using one of his modifiers.
