AG|WPJA Q4 2007 CONTEST
Ceremony: Images that capture guests and participants throughout pre-ceremony, vow-exchange, and receiving line activity.
Judges Comment: The absolute rock-star image of this quarterly contest! The lights create direction throughout the image and the laying of hands forces your eye inward to the couple. The soft B&W toning gives this image a nice feel and flow. Kudos to the photographer!
Judges Comment: Capturing and layering this moment is great seeing by the photographer! The groom in the background is the entry point and your eye slides over to the bride mimicking the groom’s action. By converting the image to B&W, you alleviated the rose petals from becoming a distraction.
Judges Comment: A simple and pure moment during the ceremony. The simplistic toning keeps this image warm and inviting as the groom lays it all out for his new bride.
Judges Comment: Ice cold, cross-processed image. Nice moment! The cool aqua-blue tones make this quiet moment before the ceremony pop.
Judges Comment: Stellar toning and a wicked dress (would love to see the front). Good composition using the bride to cover the sun also makes her look taller. Excellent toning and icy feeling in a beautiful location.
Judges Comment: Excellent framing by the photographer, it’s layered from the doorway all the way through this image. We'd suggest losing the border and let the dark area of this image frame itself.
Judges Comment: A good angle by the photographer helps fill and frame this moment. Nice job toning down the background so it’s not as distracting as it could have been. Watch those highlights, the father's right hand get lost and becomes somewhat distracting.
Judges Comment: The bride looks like she’s on the verge of tears as she is whisked away with her groom after the ceremony. The duo-toning and touch of grain give this image the look and feel of a movie still.
Judges Comment: Sharp angles and graphic lines force you down the image to the offered hand of support. Well done!
Judges Comment: Did the groom pass out black shades before the wedding? All eyes are on the bride and groom as they exit the ceremony. We like the warm toning but the overall image is too dark. Good composition and overall seeing by the photographer.
Judges Comment: Great spot lighting really makes this image sing. Excellent framing by the photographer to keep both of the shadows in the frame as the bride is escorted down the aisle or in to her reception.
Judges Comment: The warm tones in this image add to the warmth radiating from the bride. The textured overlay also helps break up the black jacket that could have distracted your eye from her face. Nice moment.
Judges Comment: Another rock-star image from a photographer who lights church venues. Good thought process and kudos to getting close to the subject during the ceremony. We like the balance that is created by the lights, then mimicked by the stained glass windows all the way down to the parents in the foreground. A highlight burn to the upper half (white area) of the frame would help anchor the focus on the couple.
Judges Comment: This image radiates joy and fun between the two subjects. The off-center composition and shallow depth of field help to separate the subjects from the background. Brighten up the young girl's eyes and you've completed the connection with your viewer.
Judges Comment: A touching moment between a guest and bride during an Indian ceremony. Good use of a B&W as the colors in Indian ceremonies can be equally distracting as they are rewarding to a photograph.
Judges Comment: An off-moment before the ceremony starts, we like the framing and subtlety in the image. The vignette/burn is a bit heavy on the right side of the frame and the overall image could be improved by burning down the white door frame.
Judges Comment: This is a fun image once you really look at it. A little more work on the toning could have helped separate the bird from the background more. Also, some fill flash (flash or Kubota) on the bride and groom’s face would have helped reveal their expressions. Fun moment and good timing by the photographer. In the end, this image may have been a quicker read had it been entered in color.
Judges Comment: We like the concept of this image and the execution is interesting. The ‘Polaroid’ image in color is a good idea but it would have been nice to a) have a moment within the pasted frame or b) frame the couple's actual location as the pasted image. A nice concept that could have been better executed.
