AG|WPJA Q3 2011 CONTEST
Ceremony: Images that capture guests and participants throughout pre-ceremony, vow-exchange, and receiving line activity.
Judges Comment: The entire frame is a view through the confetti and yet the couple walking down the aisle is very visible making this a very strong image. There is something in the middle of the frame which is brown and rectangular and in my opinion that should be cloned out of the image which would make it even stronger but this is still a clear winner.
Judges Comment: I have seen a lot of confetti images, but this one was well shot by the photographer. When I think about adding the artistic application to this particular contest, I thought this was good seeing.
Judges Comment: This is just a beautiful picture. The moments in this category were really strong. This is a quiet image, but works because of the juxtaposition of old and young. The great light really grabbed me. It was my favorite from the beginning of the edit.
Judges Comment: The juxtaposition of young and old, learned and learning, poignantly speaks to tradition. But consider the subtle way the image has been produced through both post-processing and lens use as insight into how the common can be transformed to the uncommon.
Judges Comment: I like the painterly, timeless feeling of this image. There's a lot of complexity in an image like this but most will see it at a surface level. It has the demure abundance stylized by National Geographic - profundity in humble form.
Judges Comment: I love the line up of all the heads and the high contrast is really a nice touch. Well done.
Judges Comment: The toning, the light and the composition all worked beautifully in this picture. Then you add the arm coming in as an escort and a great moment was created as well. Well done.
Judges Comment: This image is all about gesture and emotion. Well done. I would suggest just cropping out the foot on the right side of the frame.
Judges Comment: In the true spirit of WPJA…great moment! I just love the raw celebration of this picture.
Judges Comment: Nice angle and view point with strong color and good design and composition.
Judges Comment: Just a really nice moment - clean in presentation and lovely tonality to the image.
Judges Comment: Of course, we all know there are as many reasons to hold a wedding outdoors as there are to conduct the ceremony indoors. Nonetheless, it's not often you see a juxtaposition of the two done in a way that makes us pause to consider the reasons.
Judges Comment: The moment jumped out of the edit. Really great image for the photographer and gift for the family. The toning was nice. I liked the monochromatic quality – not black and white, but not full color either. I think it was a nice choice to let the viewer fall right to the couples’ faces.
Judges Comment: I'm pretty sure that all images could be argued as being in one of two categories: life and death (eg: victory and defeat etc). This image portrays life in spite of the cemetery adjacent to the church. But I particularly like the way the bride and bridesmaid stand out from the scene in spite of the rather dreary surroundings.
Judges Comment: The more that I look at this image the more I like it. The composition is very strong with graphic appeal created by the pink carpet. I love the soft whites framing the center portion. Well done.
Judges Comment: Strong graphic image and well executed. I love the side view with the bouquet and the contrast of the dress and background. Great detail throughout the image.
Judges Comment: This is such an appealing image that strikes a universal chord via those colorful flowers to the bright focal arrays in the foreground.
Judges Comment: Funny and a little weird. I liked all the expressions and the energy of this picture. It captured a true moment of the day.
Judges Comment: The composition is really strong. I love the crop at the top which makes the hand and the bible very predominant. Great angle.
Judges Comment: The groom dives for cover beneath a deluge of rice. It's a fairly humorous moment with some good action that keeps our eyes engaged.
Judges Comment: This image was haunting. The light and the depth of field added a great deal to the mood. The composition was nice as well. But the photographer captured their expressions so well. I wanted to look at this picture for a long time.
Judges Comment: Great expression and emotion and wonderful gesture.
Judges Comment: This was one of the more unique receiving line images I have seen. Because of the light and the body language caught in the silhouettes, the image had a great graphic quality.
Judges Comment: Nice strong composition and very well executed.
